Farm in the Off-season

Art, watercolor
11” x 14” watercolor

A cold, possibly windy scene, yet well-lit enough to include some warmth. the hills far off in the distance are catching light too for further illumination and interest. But dark shadows lurk in the foreground to suggest there is more going on here than meets the eye. The sky; stormy, but will it snow or rain or will we have wind gusts strong enough to knock over a backyard swing-set? Who knows, but hopefully you’ve enjoyed this painting and that it caused you to feel warm, cold, concerned, or something else.

How to Paint a Light Effect in Watercolor

Painting a Light Effect in Watercolor

I decided to try something a little different by doing a quick 1 hour painting while also creating a time lapse of the process. The time lapse turned out to be 26 seconds, originally. Then, I started messing with it in Videoshop and extended it to about 2 minutes by slowing down the speed, adding music, and adding text. I had fun making this little video and I hope you find it helpful as you try to paint your own light effect in watercolor!

Let there be light- w/c 10×14”

The photo I worked from to help guide this painting was taken a couple of years ago. I’m not sure what made me go back in time; maybe the light effect, maybe the time of year. I wanted to show the light coming in from the background to light up the river with enough contrast with dark areas of the river, to keep it interesting. Things may seem just gray and brown this time of year, but I think the lighting in the winter is tremendous – like a lamp with a dimmer adjustment, yet positioned at a certain angle to still create dramatic effects.
